Pass homes respectfully in nature

Sweden’s Right of Public Access allows broad movement through nature, but not inside the privacy zone around homes. There is no fixed distance in metres; terrain, visibility and the situation determine how much space to leave.

How close can I walk to a house in Swedish nature?

There is no universal distance in metres. Keep enough distance for residents to remain undisturbed. The size of the privacy zone depends on factors such as terrain, vegetation, fences and whether you are merely passing or stopping.

The size of a home privacy zone is case-specific; this guide deliberately does not invent a standard distance.

No fixed distance

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency states that there is no defined size for the home privacy zone.

Context matters

Distance, terrain, vegetation and fences all affect how the privacy zone should be understood.

Passing is different from stopping

More distance is generally needed if you stop for a picnic or other activity than if you simply pass by.

Respect residents’ privacy

The core principle is that residents are entitled to privacy in the area closest to their home. The Right of Public Access does not apply inside that zone.
